Follow-up report · Biotech cult names
IOVA, IBRX and ALT in 2026: decisive year for three cult biotech stocks
A parallel “year of truth” roadmap for Iovance Biotherapeutics (IOVA), ImmunityBio (IBRX) and Altimmune (ALT),
three names with huge retail followings, real science on the table and very little room for execution mistakes.
Focus: late-stage oncology and metabolic disease
Scope: USA-listed small/mid caps only · no investment advice
1. Why 2026 is a “no excuses” year for IOVA, IBRX and ALT
Over 2024–2025 all three stories made the jump from “interesting pipeline slides” to something much more concrete:
Iovance finally secured the first tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) approval with Amtagvi in advanced melanoma,
ImmunityBio obtained its long-awaited US approval for Anktiva in BCG-unresponsive carcinoma in situ of the bladder,
and Altimmune delivered a strong Phase 2b dataset for pemvidutide in MASH with an FDA Breakthrough Therapy
designation and clear alignment on the Phase 3 framework.
The result is that, as we enter 2026, the main question is no longer “will regulators ever say yes?” but rather
“how big, how fast and how efficiently can these projects scale?”. For cult stocks, that shift is crucial:
once the binary regulatory risk is partly behind them, the market starts to judge much more harshly on execution,
balance sheet discipline and the gap between slide-deck ambition and real-world data.
This follow-up note does not re-write the full theses you already have on Merlintrader. Instead it zooms in on
what 2026 actually needs to prove for each name, how their key catalysts line up through the year and what
common threads link IOVA, IBRX and ALT when you look at them side by side.
2. Quick snapshots – three very different ways of being “cult”
Before diving into individual timelines, it helps to put the three names on the same page. One TIL pure play
with its first product on the market, one immunotherapy platform with both commercial revenue and an extremely
ambitious pipeline, and one metabolic player trying to carve out space alongside the GLP-1 giants.
Company: Iovance Biotherapeutics – TIL cell therapy specialist focused on solid tumours.
Flagship asset: Amtagvi (lifileucel), autologous TIL for advanced melanoma after PD-1
and targeted therapy, on the US market since 2024.
2026 key question: can Iovance transform early commercial momentum into a sustainable
TIL franchise and move beyond melanoma toward lung cancer and other solid tumours without losing control
of costs and manufacturing complexity?
2026 focus: commercial ramp metrics, additional real-world data and visibility on the NSCLC strategy
(IOV-LUN-202 and regulatory path).
Company: ImmunityBio – immunotherapy company built around IL-15 superagonist Anktiva
and a broader “immunology toolbox” including CAR-NK programs.
Flagship asset: Anktiva + BCG in BCG-unresponsive NMIBC, with an approved label in
carcinoma in situ and multiple ongoing expansion trials (papillary-only, BCG-naïve, other settings).
2026 key question: will the company secure the papillary-only label expansion and keep
access to capital while scaling manufacturing, or will balance sheet and execution risk catch up with
the enthusiasm around the platform?
2026 focus: supplemental BLA resubmission and potential review for papillary-only disease, progress in
earlier-line NMIBC (QUILT-2.005) and how those steps feed the revenue ramp.
Company: Altimmune – metabolic and liver-disease play centered on pemvidutide, a
dual GLP-1/glucagon agonist.
Flagship asset: pemvidutide in MASH, with Phase 2b IMPACT data showing robust histology
and NIT signals and Breakthrough Therapy Designation from the FDA.
2026 key question: can Altimmune turn a very promising Phase 2b story into a credible,
fully funded Phase 3 program while navigating intense competition from much larger GLP-1 players?
2026 focus: final Phase 3 design, timing of first patient in, strength of the balance sheet after
recent financings and how the market treats pemvidutide versus injectable and oral GLP-1 incumbents.
3. Iovance (IOVA) – from “first TIL approval” to industrial-scale execution
3.1 Where the story stands after 2025
Amtagvi’s approval fundamentally changed how investors look at Iovance. The company is no longer just a
high-burn, pre-revenue cell-therapy developer: it is now reporting quarterly product revenue, updating the
market on treatment center activation and sharing early real-world data that, if anything, look at least as
good as the original registrational study. The latest updates showed objective response rates in commercial
practice in the mid-40% range and disease control rates above 70%, broadly consistent with or slightly above
the pivotal data, which is exactly what you want to see when a complex cell therapy leaves the trial setting
and hits everyday oncology.
Financially, Iovance still sits firmly in small-cap territory and remains loss-making, but product revenue
is now a real line on the income statement rather than a distant promise. Guidance for 2025 already pointed
to hundreds of millions of dollars in potential sales as the launch matures; 2026 will show whether those
curves bend toward that trajectory or flatten out earlier than bulls expect.
3.2 2026 catalysts – three things that actually matter
The temptation with any newly approved biotech product is to focus obsessively on each quarter’s revenue
print. For Iovance in 2026, that is important, but it is only one of three pillars that really determine
where the stock goes over the next 12–18 months.
The first pillar is the depth and breadth of the commercial launch in melanoma. It is not
just about total sales but about the shape of the adoption curve: how quickly high-volume academic and
community centers come online, how confident oncologists feel in selecting patients for TIL therapy, and
how payer discussions evolve as real-world outcomes accumulate.
The second pillar is visibility on lung cancer and other solid tumours. The IOV-LUN-202 trial
in NSCLC is designed to generate the evidence that regulators would need for a potential sBLA and, later on,
to support commercial use in a much larger tumour type. 2026 is unlikely to deliver a full regulatory
decision, but it should bring more clarity on enrollment status, data-cut timing and how the company plans
to sequence filings beyond melanoma.
The third pillar is manufacturing and cash discipline. TIL therapies are operationally heavy:
they require specialised facilities, tight logistics and a lot of upfront investment. Iovance has already
spent heavily to build its cell-therapy manufacturing hub; in 2026, investors will look closely at how much
additional capex is needed, how each extra dollar of spending translates into incremental capacity and how
quickly the company can narrow operating losses as revenue scales.
3.3 Why 2026 is “no excuses” for IOVA
For a long time the Iovance debate was dominated by the binary of “approval yes or no”. That phase is over.
The new debate is about the quality of execution: if the launch stalls, if NSCLC timelines slip into the
distance or if cash burn remains stubbornly high despite growing sales, the market will not give IOVA the
same benefit of the doubt it did when everything was still hypothetical. On the other hand, if the company
can prove that it has found a repeatable industrial model for TILs, 2026 will be remembered as the year when
the story finally left the “science project” bucket and graduated into a real oncology franchise.
4. ImmunityBio (IBRX) – making the most of a fragile, high-beta success
4.1 From approval to expansion: where Anktiva is now
ImmunityBio enters 2026 with something that many high-profile immunotherapy stories never achieve: an approved
product in a real oncology indication. Anktiva plus BCG is on the US market for BCG-unresponsive CIS in
non-muscle invasive bladder cancer and has already started to generate revenue, validating years of work on
the IL-15 superagonist platform and demonstrating that the company can get through the regulatory gate when
the data support it.
At the same time, the balance sheet remains stretched, the pipeline extremely ambitious and the valuation
volatile. That combination is why IBRX has become a classic “cult” name: the upside stories are big and easy
to tell, but there is little margin for error if something goes wrong with either regulators or funding.
4.2 2026 catalysts – the papillary-only label and beyond
The most visible 2026 catalyst is the potential resubmission and review of the supplemental BLA for
papillary-only BCG-unresponsive NMIBC. After a “refuse to file” setback, ImmunityBio engaged with the
FDA, agreed to provide additional analyses without running entirely new clinical trials and committed to
deliver those data within a short timeframe. If the agency accepts the resubmission, a new review clock will
define the next major run-up window for the name.
Why does this matter so much? Because papillary-only disease represents a substantial slice of the NMIBC
population. A positive decision here would significantly expand the addressable market for Anktiva, strengthen
the company’s hand in guideline discussions and reinforce the idea that the initial approval was not a one-off
lucky break but the first step in a broader bladder-cancer strategy.
A second crucial medium-term driver is progress in earlier-line and BCG-naïve settings, such
as the randomized QUILT-2.005 trial. While 2026 may not deliver final results, enrollment progress and updated
guidance on data-cut timing will help investors refine their models of how far up the treatment algorithm
Anktiva can realistically move.
Finally, there is the rest of the pipeline: chemo-free CD19 CAR-NK programs in hematology,
other solid-tumour combinations and platform-level technology bets. In isolation, each of these might be
seen as a long-dated option. In the current funding environment, however, they also represent future cash
needs and potential dilution unless the core bladder-cancer franchise starts pulling more weight on the
P&L.
4.3 Why 2026 is “make it count” for IBRX
For ImmunityBio, 2026 is about proving that success with Anktiva can be scaled and replicated, not just
celebrated. The market will be watching three things above all: whether the papillary-only filing is accepted
and moves smoothly through the review process, how quickly revenue ramps in the existing CIS label, and
whether the company can manage its capital structure without lurching from one dilutive event to the next.
If those three elements move in the right direction, the “cult” label attached to IBRX starts to look more
like “high-beta leader in a complex space”. If they do not, the same enthusiasm that pushed the stock higher
in 2025–early 2026 can reverse brutally as investors try to re-price both execution risk and the true cost of
funding such an ambitious platform.
5. Altimmune (ALT) – between the GLP-1 wave and a serious MASH contender
5.1 From “another GLP-1 play” to Breakthrough Therapy in MASH
In the early days of the obesity and metabolic wave, Altimmune was often lumped together with a long list of
small companies trying to ride the GLP-1 narrative. Over the last year that perception has started to change.
Pemvidutide’s Phase 2b IMPACT data in MASH showed not just respectable weight loss and liver-fat reduction,
but also a meaningful rate of histologic MASH resolution without fibrosis worsening and favourable non-invasive
marker trends. On top of that, the FDA granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation for pemvidutide in MASH and
aligned with the company on a Phase 3 program intended to support potential approval.
That combination – solid mid-stage data, regulatory validation and a clearer path to registration – is what
lifted ALT out of the “crowded GLP-1 noise” bucket and into a smaller group of genuinely credible late-stage
metabolic names. It does not make success automatic, but it does mean the story now deserves a different level
of attention.
5.2 2026 catalysts – from plan to actual Phase 3 execution
For Altimmune, 2026 is all about turning plans into execution. The company has signalled its
intention to start a Phase 3 MASH program based on the IMPACT data and the Breakthrough designation. Investors
will be watching closely for the final trial design (endpoints, duration, patient mix, geography), the exact
timing of first-patient-in and any early commentary on screening and enrollment dynamics.
On the financing side, Altimmune has already taken steps to extend its runway, including equity offerings that
were explicitly framed as funding for Phase 3. The question for 2026 is whether that runway proves long enough
to execute the initial registrational studies without repeated, painful trips back to the capital markets, and
whether management can balance trial speed against cost discipline.
Finally, there is the positioning of pemvidutide within the broader obesity/weight-loss narrative.
Even if MASH is the lead indication, the company cannot ignore a world where patients, physicians and payers
increasingly think in terms of integrated metabolic risk rather than siloed liver disease. How Altimmune talks
about weight, liver outcomes, tolerability and potential combination strategies in 2026 will shape how the
market values the long-term optionality of pemvidutide beyond the initial MASH label.
5.3 Why 2026 is a credibility test for ALT
The core science behind pemvidutide now has enough data and regulatory backing that investors are willing to
debate peak sales rather than basic feasibility. The weak link, as often in small-cap biotech, is the balance
sheet and the execution risk of a complex, global Phase 3 program. If Altimmune can show that it is capable of
running that program efficiently, keeping control of dilution and communicating clearly about timelines, 2026
will look like the year when the story stopped trading like a short-squeeze vehicle and started trading more
like a serious metabolic contender.
6. Common threads – what these three “cult” names really have in common
On the surface, IOVA, IBRX and ALT live in very different worlds: bespoke cell therapy manufacturing for solid
tumours, bladder-cancer immunotherapy and metabolic disease in the shadow of the GLP-1 giants. Underneath,
their 2026 stories rhyme more than it seems.
First, all three names are moving from a binary risk phase to an execution phase. The biggest
regulatory questions around Amtagvi, Anktiva and pemvidutide have at least a partial answer. What remains is
the hard, unglamorous work of building commercial infrastructure, running additional trials, keeping regulators
aligned and defending the balance sheet.
Second, they all face a tension between ambition and funding. Each management team has a long
list of additional indications, combinations and geographies they would like to pursue. At the same time,
rates are no longer near zero, specialist capital is more selective and the market has little patience for
companies that burn cash aggressively without clear milestones in sight. Choosing what not to do in 2026 may
be just as important as choosing what to prioritize.
Third, they share the reality of being cult stocks with large retail communities. That brings
liquidity, attention and sometimes a powerful short-squeeze bid, but it also means that positioning can get
crowded and that sentiment can flip quickly on any disappointment. For long-term investors, separating noise
from signal in those flows is an ongoing challenge.
7. Sentiment snapshot – how the crowd is positioned
Without going line by line through every social thread, a few broad themes stand out when you look at how
traders discuss IOVA, IBRX and ALT on Reddit, Stocktwits and X.
What the crowd seems to believe right now:
IOVA is talked about as the “real science” TIL pure play where patience will eventually be rewarded if the
company can simply execute. IBRX sits at the opposite extreme of the emotional spectrum: for some it is the
quintessential high-beta moonshot with transformational potential in bladder cancer and beyond, for others it
is a case study in balance-sheet risk. ALT, finally, is seen as a tug-of-war between strong MASH data and the
constant shadow of dilution and competition from much larger GLP-1 names.
The key point is that almost all of this sentiment comes from non-professional traders.
Comments, memes and home-made models can be useful to feel where the crowd is leaning, but they are not a
substitute for reading filings, trial protocols and official regulatory documents. In 2026 that distinction
matters more than ever.
8. 2026 catalyst map – what to actually watch for
The table below is not an exhaustive list of every possible headline, but a pragmatic map of the events that
can genuinely change how the market values these three names over the next 12–18 months. Dates outside fixed
regulatory windows are indicative and based on company guidance and public information; as always, real
timelines can slip or move forward.
| Ticker | Key event | Type | 2026 window | Why it matters |
|---|

cross-check with the latest company filings, press releases and regulatory documents before trading around
specific dates.
10. How to use this parallel follow-up – and what it is not
This piece is intentionally written as a parallel report: instead of debating price targets name by name,
it asks what 2026 really has to prove for three of the most widely discussed “cult” stocks in your universe.
It is most useful when read alongside the single-ticker deep dives, cash-runway analyses and Daily Hit notes
that live elsewhere on Merlintrader.
It is not a list of recommendations and it deliberately avoids simple “bull/bear” labels.
The reality for IOVA, IBRX and ALT is more nuanced: the same data point can be positive or negative depending
on your time horizon, risk tolerance and portfolio construction. What this report tries to give you is a
clearer mental map of the moving parts so that you can place future headlines in context.

Focus: oncologia avanzata e malattie metaboliche
Ambito: small/mid cap USA · nessun consiglio di investimento
piuttosto “quanto grande, quanto velocemente e quanto in modo efficiente queste storie possono scalare?”.
Focus 2026: resubmission e potenziale review dell’sBLA papillary-only, progressi nelle linee più
richiedono impianti specializzati, logistica serrata e molto capex upfront.
necessario, a quanta capacità aggiuntiva verrà effettivamente sbloccata e a quanto rapidamente l’azienda
4.1 Dall’approvazione all’espansione: dove sta Anktiva oggi
4.2 Catalyst 2026 – l’etichetta papillary-only e il resto
papillary-only BCG-refrattario.
questi dati in tempi stretti.
alto Anktiva potrà realisticamente salire nell’algoritmo terapeutico.
4.3 Perché il 2026 è “make it count” per IBRX
all’altro.
storie metaboliche veramente credibili.
diverso.
brucia cassa senza milestone chiari.
Senza passare riga per riga tutti i thread, alcuni pattern grossi emergono osservando come i trader parlano di
IOVA, IBRX e ALT su Reddit, Stocktwits e X.

comunicati ufficiali e documenti regolatori.
