What mattered most — and what matters next

  • The leadership break was concentrated, not universal. Semiconductors and mega-cap technology drove the headline damage, while the equal-weight market, financials, industrials and energy showed better relative strength.
  • Inflation looked cooler in the rear-view mirror. June CPI fell 0.4% month over month and core CPI rose 2.6% year over year; June PPI fell 0.3%. But the renewed jump in crude oil threatens to make those numbers feel stale quickly.
  • AI spending becomes the market’s main earnings test. Alphabet’s Wednesday report is the first hyperscaler checkpoint after the chip rout. Texas Instruments and Intel will test whether high expectations across semiconductors still have fundamental support.
  • Next week is event-rich despite a light U.S. macro calendar. Earnings, the ECB, AMD Advancing AI, Farnborough and biotech catalysts can create violent single-name and sector moves even if the broad indices remain range-bound.
  • The cleanest risk map is cross-asset. Watch Brent and WTI, the U.S. 10-year yield, the dollar, semiconductor breadth and whether $SPY can stabilize without another round of forced selling in crowded AI names.

1 • The week that was

From inflation relief to an AI valuation reset

The week began with investors waiting for inflation confirmation and ended with the Nasdaq under sustained pressure, Netflix down double digits after earnings and the semiconductor index more than 20% below its late-June high. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq posted a second consecutive weekly decline, but the tape was more nuanced than the headline numbers: eight of the eleven S&P sectors were positive during Thursday’s tech washout, and the equal-weight index held up much better than the cap-weighted benchmarks.

Monday — positioning before inflationRisk appetite was cautious as traders prepared for CPI, bank earnings and a dense corporate calendar. The key question was whether softer inflation could offset stretched AI positioning.
Tuesday — CPI delivered reliefJune headline CPI fell 0.4% month over month and slowed to 3.5% year over year. Core inflation eased to 2.6% year over year. The report lowered immediate rate-hike anxiety, though energy’s renewed climb quickly complicated the message.
Wednesday — PPI and ASML reinforced the split tapeProducer prices fell 0.3% in June. ASML posted €9.3 billion in quarterly sales, €2.9 billion in net income and raised its 2026 sales outlook, but the market increasingly demanded evidence that exceptional AI demand could justify exceptional valuations.
Thursday — semiconductors broke lowerSelling accelerated across memory, equipment and AI infrastructure names. Strong bank results and resilient non-tech sectors could not prevent a broad Nasdaq decline. The move looked like a crowded-position reset, but price damage became technically meaningful.
Friday — Netflix, oil and geopolitics added pressureNetflix fell roughly 11% after a softer outlook; oil jumped more than 4% as the U.S.–Iran conflict intensified. The S&P 500 lost 1.01%, the Nasdaq 1.4% and the Dow 0.77% in the final session.
2 • Macro and cross-asset dashboard

Cooler domestic inflation met a fresh external inflation shock

Disinflation

June CPI

Headline CPI fell 0.4% MoM and slowed to 3.5% YoY. Core CPI rose 2.6% YoY, down from 2.9% in May. The near-term Fed message became less urgent.

Wholesale prices

June PPI

Final-demand PPI fell 0.3% MoM, the biggest decline in fourteen months. The 12-month rate remained elevated at 5.5%, so the report was relief, not an all-clear.

Consumer

Retail sales and claims

June retail sales rose 0.2%; the core control-group-style signal was firmer. Initial claims fell to 208,000, the lowest since May, keeping the labor backdrop comparatively resilient.

Oil shock

Brent and WTI

Brent ended near $88.10 and WTI near $82.49, each up roughly 4.5% on Friday. A persistent move higher would feed back into inflation expectations, transport margins and Fed pricing.

Rates

U.S. 10-year yield

The 10-year finished around 4.55%, little changed on the week. That stability hid an important tension: cooler data pulls yields down, while oil and geopolitical risk can push inflation compensation higher.

Safe haven

Gold

Gold finished around $4,015 and lost more than 3% for the week. The decline despite geopolitical stress suggests positioning, real yields and dollar dynamics mattered more than a simple safe-haven narrative.

The macro contradiction to carry forward

The June CPI and PPI releases reduced the probability of an immediate Fed response, but both reports captured a period when energy prices were retreating. Markets now have to decide whether renewed Middle East escalation is temporary noise or the start of a second inflation impulse. With the next FOMC meeting on July 28–29, every move in oil and inflation expectations matters.

3 • Sector and narrative map

Where leadership weakened — and where money rotated

Pressure

AI hardware and semiconductors

The PHLX Semiconductor Index closed more than 20% below its late-June record. Memory, equipment, networking and crowded AI winners were hit as investors questioned capex efficiency, peak margins and whether lower-cost Chinese models could change the economics of the buildout.

Next test: $GOOGL capex, $TXN demand commentary, $INTC server and foundry execution, and whether $AMD can reset the narrative at Advancing AI.

Mixed

Broad market breadth

The cap-weighted indices looked weaker than the average stock. Financials, industrials and select cyclicals held up, while the equal-weight S&P remained near recent highs. A broadening market would be constructive; indiscriminate selling beyond technology would be a warning that the correction is becoming systemic.

Relative strength

Energy and defense

Oil producers benefited from the crude spike, while defense names remained tied to Middle East headlines and the expanding security agenda. Farnborough will put missiles, drones, autonomy, aircraft backlogs and supply constraints in the spotlight.

Event-driven

Biotech and healthcare

The sector delivered a dense mix of FDA decisions, M&A, financing and clinical-data setups. The lesson was familiar: science and corporate structure must be analyzed together. Approval does not eliminate launch, label, cash-runway or dilution risk.

4 • Company and earnings radar

The most consequential corporate stories

$ASML — strong quarter, higher outlook

Q2 sales reached €9.3 billion, net income €2.9 billion and EPS €7.59. ASML raised full-year 2026 net-sales guidance to €43–45 billion with a 54%–56% gross-margin range. It was one of the clearest pieces of fundamental support for AI infrastructure demand.

$NFLX — guidance reset

Revenue of $12.56 billion narrowly missed consensus and the third-quarter outlook disappointed. Shares fell roughly 11% Friday, reviving questions about engagement, disclosure and the competitive cost of attention.

Money-center banks — healthy start

Major banks benefited from stronger trading revenue and M&A advisory fees. The reports helped the financial sector absorb some of the rotation out of technology and suggested capital-markets activity remains supportive.

$TSM and the expectation problem

Strong operating results did not immunize the stock from the broader chip selloff. When positioning and valuation are extreme, “good” can be insufficient; guidance, capex returns and forward supply-demand commentary become the real catalyst.

Moonshot AI — the new fear

Chinese startup Moonshot unveiled a Kimi model it said could compete with leading U.S. systems. The market reaction was less about one model and more about the possibility that cheaper inference or training could weaken the assumed return on hyperscaler capex.

Space complex — post-IPO gravity

SpaceX and listed space names weakened further as momentum unwound. The group now needs execution—launch cadence, backlog conversion and credible government or commercial milestones—to replace price momentum as the primary support.

5 • Biotech weekly recap

Approvals, M&A and dilution moved the sector

TickerEventWhat happenedTrading / diligence angle
$CELCFDA approvalThe FDA approved Revtorpyk (gedatolisib) for a defined HR-positive/HER2-negative advanced breast-cancer population.Approval was followed by selling as investors assessed label breadth, discontinuations, launch timing and commercialization risk. A regulatory win is not the same as a frictionless launch.
$ATAI / $LLYAcquisitionLilly agreed to buy AtaiBeckley for $6.75 cash per share plus a nontransferable CVR worth up to $2.50. The structure implies $2.8 billion upfront and up to $1 billion contingent. The spread now reflects closing risk and the probability-weighted value of the CVR, not simply the headline “up to $3.8 billion” figure.
$MRKFDA approvalThe FDA approved Lipfendra (enlicitide), the first once-daily oral PCSK9 inhibitor for LDL cholesterol reduction in eligible adults.A strategically important category expansion: oral administration could broaden adoption, but payer access, pricing and real-world persistence will determine commercial impact.
$JSPRMerger + PIPEJasper completed its all-stock Kira acquisition and announced a roughly $132 million PIPE. Legacy Jasper holders are expected to own about 6.68% on a fully diluted, as-converted basis. The financing is not the purchase price. Share count, ownership transfer, exchange compliance and reverse-split risk are central to the equity story.
$DBVTATM filingDBV filed an at-the-market prospectus allowing up to $150 million of sales.Capacity is not the same as immediate issuance, but the overhang matters. Watch cash needs, volume, prospectus supplements and actual share-count changes.
$OTLKResale registrationA July 17 S-3 registered 17,258,065 shares underlying investor and placement-agent warrants from the April financing. This was not a fresh primary offering. The relevant variables are warrant exercise, proceeds, existing ATM capacity and the July 29 FDA decision.

ASRS catalysts that can shape Monday’s biotech tape

ASRS 2026 closes on Saturday, July 18. At the stated publication time, the following presentations were still scheduled rather than incorporated as completed results. Any company slide deck or post-presentation release should be checked before interpreting Monday’s premarket reaction.

8:48 ET

$BLTE — Phase 3 DRAGON

Belite Bio is scheduled to present Phase 3 DRAGON results for tinlarebant in Stargardt disease. Focus on the prespecified endpoint, effect size, sensitivity analyses, safety and whether the conference presentation adds information beyond prior disclosures.

10:44 ET

$ANNX — ARCHER analysis

Annexon will discuss baseline characteristics associated with confirmed ≥15-letter BCVA loss in Phase 2 ARCHER. This is an important patient-selection and Phase 3 interpretation exercise, but it is not a new pivotal topline readout.

2:58 ET

$FDMT — 4D-150 at two years

4DMT is scheduled to present two-year PRISM Phase 2b follow-up in wet AMD. This is the most clearly incremental Saturday dataset of the three: durability, supplemental-injection burden, visual acuity, anatomy and inflammation are the central variables.

Monday gap-risk rule: do not trade the headline alone. Compare the presentation with the prior dataset, check the evaluable population and follow-up cut, then separate true clinical change from conference repackaging.
6 • Weekend risk bridge

Why Monday may begin before the earnings calendar

Iran renewed attacks on U.S.-aligned Gulf states after another night of U.S. strikes, with reported targets including military and critical infrastructure. The market transmission channel is straightforward: escalation can lift crude oil, shipping insurance and inflation expectations; higher inflation expectations can pressure bonds and duration-sensitive technology; defense and energy can outperform on a relative basis.

Escalation trigger

Confirmed disruption to Gulf production, desalination, ports, bases or shipping lanes—especially the Strait of Hormuz—would be materially different from headline-only risk.

Price confirmation

Watch Sunday futures, Brent and WTI gaps, tanker rates, the dollar and U.S. Treasury yields. Cross-asset confirmation matters more than social-media intensity.

De-escalation signal

Verified diplomatic movement, intact shipping flows and oil giving back Friday’s jump would reduce the probability of a persistent inflation impulse.

10 • Scenario map

Three paths for the coming week

Bull case

Oil gives back its geopolitical premium, yields remain contained, Alphabet validates AI capex returns, and semiconductor breadth stabilizes. Rotation broadens without turning into forced deleveraging.

Base case

Choppy, two-way tape. Technology remains volatile, but financials, industrials, energy and healthcare absorb flows. Earnings create large single-name gaps while $SPY holds a broad range.

Bear case

Gulf escalation pushes oil and yields higher, Alphabet or Intel disappoints, and selling spreads from semiconductors into the equal-weight market. Correlations rise and defensive positioning dominates.

Practical confirmation checklist

Broad market
$SPY, $QQQ, $IWM, equal-weight S&P and advance/decline breadth. The question is whether weakness stays concentrated or becomes market-wide.
AI / semiconductors
$SOXX, $SMH, $NVDA, $AMD, $INTC, $TXN, $ASML and $TSM. Look for higher lows, improving breadth and a positive response to genuinely strong guidance.
Cross-asset
Brent, WTI, U.S. 10-year yield, dollar index, gold and VIX. A simultaneous rise in oil, yields and volatility is the most difficult combination for long-duration equities.
Defense / aerospace
$RTX, $LMT, $NOC, $BA, $AVAV, $KTOS, $RCAT, $ONDS and $RKLB. Separate confirmed contracts and deliveries from nonbinding show headlines.
Biotech
$KURA, $MNKD, $OTLK, $CAPR and $REPL. Read primary documents, identify exact event timing and model dilution before treating a catalyst as a directional thesis.
11 • Bottom line

The market is moving from a macro week into a proof week

Last week’s cooler CPI and PPI reduced one immediate threat, but oil and geopolitics introduced another. The semiconductor correction has already moved beyond a routine one-day wobble, yet the resilience of the equal-weight market shows that investors have not abandoned risk wholesale.

That makes the coming week less about forecasting one index close and more about measuring confirmation. Do hyperscalers defend AI spending with credible returns? Do chip companies support the demand narrative? Does oil retain its war premium? Can industrials, financials and healthcare keep broadening the tape? And in biotech, do primary data and FDA documents support the social-media version of each catalyst?

The most important discipline: define what would confirm or invalidate each setup before the event. In a tape this headline-sensitive, a good story without timing, liquidity and risk controls is not a plan.
