PacBio sells HiFi long-read sequencers, the consumables that run on them and service. SPRQ-Nx cut the list cost of a Revio genome to $345, and in late September two third parties, a VA genomics contractor and a methylation-software developer, built announcements around HiFi data. Against that, 2026 revenue guidance was lowered to $155–165M, Q2 gross margin fell to 32% and $641.0M of convertible notes convert far above the share price.

The third-quarter 2025 report came on November 5, 2025. The next release is the first full quarter of SPRQ-Nx on both Revio and Vega, the first under chief executive Mark Van Oene and the quarter that absorbs about $2.0M of restructuring charges. It will also show whether second-half revenue is tracking the $78.8–88.8M implied by the full-year outlook.
At June 30, 2026 PacBio owed $200.0M of 1.50% notes due August 15, 2029 and $441.0M of 1.375% notes due December 15, 2030. Both conversion prices sit well above the $2.51 close of October 1, 2026, so the notes behave as debt to be repaid or refinanced unless the shares rise a long way. Cash, equivalents and investments were $236.9M on the same date, and operating cash use was $80.3M in the first half.
Consumables were 51.5% of Q2 revenue and the company expects them to keep growing as the Revio and Vega installed bases expand. SPRQ-Nx lowered the Revio list cost to $345 a genome and Vega output rose to 90 Gb a run. Sampled and EpiSign built September announcements on HiFi. A $30–40M annualized cost cut by the end of 2027 would narrow losses if revenue holds.
The 2026 revenue range was cut by $10M on August 5. Q2 consumables fell from $21.8M in Q1 to $20.1M, Revio pull-through dropped to about $202,000 per system and GAAP gross margin slid to 32% on memory costs and lower Revio prices. Operating cash use was $80.3M in the first half against $236.9M of cash and $641.0M of notes. Stockholders’ equity turned negative, and third-party contracts do not disclose what PacBio itself will invoice.
PacBio earns from systems, repeat consumable purchases and support. Revio serves high-throughput genome centers and clinical labs; Vega is the benchtop system. Since selling its short-read assets to Illumina on January 30, 2026, the company is a pure long-read business. Placements matter only if they lead to sustained consumable use.
Q2 2026 revenue was $39.0M against $39.8M a year earlier; consumables were $20.1M against $18.9M, Revio placements 20 against 15. GAAP gross margin fell to 32% from 37% and the net loss was $44.7M. Guidance was lowered to $155–165M, a 40-person restructuring followed, and the CEO changed on August 5.
EpiSign launched METRIC 5-base, extending analysis of more than 300 episignature disorders to Illumina 5-base, PacBio HiFi and Oxford Nanopore data. It is research use only; Ambry Genetics described an initial evaluation on HiFi data.
Sampled was awarded a five-year VA contract worth up to $27.1M covering genotyping, long-read genomes, methylation and proteomics. The contract is with Sampled; PacBio revenue from it is not disclosed.
The company reports Vega SPRQ-Nx shipping that week: up to 90 Gb per run from 60 Gb, two- and four-hour runs and a $995 U.S. list price per run. Specifications are not booked revenue.
Revenue $39.0M, GAAP gross margin 32%, cash $236.9M. Full-year outlook cut to $155–165M from $165–175M; about 40 roles (8%) cut; Mark Van Oene succeeds Christian Henry as CEO.

The three paths below are conditional editorial scenarios built on the figures dated in the rest of the analysis. None carries a probability or a price target, and none should be read as a forecast of the share price.
SPRQ-Nx does what it was designed to do: a lower cost per genome pulls more samples onto Revio, Vega customers run more often, and consumables return to sequential growth from the $20.1M of Q2. Basecamp, providers such as Sampled and clinical laboratories translate into visible consumable volume. Memory costs ease, gross margin recovers toward the 40% non-GAAP level of 2025, the $30–40M expense reduction lands and revenue reaches the upper part of the $155–165M range. The company then addresses the 2029 and 2030 notes from improving cash generation rather than necessity.
Instrument demand stays uneven because academic and U.S. government funding remains tight, while consumables provide a floor. Revenue lands inside the guided range, with second-half revenue close to the $83.0M of the second half of 2025. Gross margin improves slowly as memory costs temper the benefit of a richer consumables mix, which the company itself said in its Q2 Form 10-Q. Cost cuts reduce cash use, but the company still consumes cash through 2027. The financing question, how the $641.0M of notes is repaid, exchanged or refinanced, stays open.
Cheaper genomes reduce revenue per project faster than they add projects, so consumables stagnate while pricing falls. Revio pull-through keeps sliding from the roughly $242,000 of Q4 2025, Vega placements stay in the mid-twenties per quarter and revenue misses the lower end of guidance. Gross margin stays near or below the low thirties, cash falls toward the level of the 2029 principal, and the company raises equity at a low price or negotiates with noteholders on unfavorable terms.
The reading above rests on a few measurable claims: that consumables are the recurring core, that SPRQ-Nx lowers cost without destroying revenue, that cost cuts reduce cash use, and that the balance sheet allows time. Each can be checked against the next filings.
None of these is a prediction. They are the observations that would contradict the analysis, listed so that readers can check them against the next filings rather than take the reading on trust.
Pacific Biosciences of California, Inc. designs, manufactures and sells sequencing systems built around HiFi long reads. The commercial model has three layers. Instrument revenue is booked when a laboratory buys a Revio, the high-throughput system, or a Vega, the benchtop system. Consumable revenue follows as those systems run samples: SMRT Cells, sequencing chemistry and library-preparation kits. Service and other revenue covers support contracts and related services. The link between the layers is what investors call pull-through: an installed instrument is only worth as much as the reagent purchases it triggers over its life.
HiFi reads combine long DNA fragments with repeated observation of the same molecule, which yields high single-molecule accuracy. In practice that lets laboratories resolve structural variants, repeat expansions, phasing and methylation in one assay, problems that short-read sequencing handles less completely.
Customers range from academic and government institutes and genome centers to commercial and clinical laboratories, hospitals, CROs and pharmaceutical and agricultural companies. That mix explains the volatility of instrument sales: the Q2 Form 10-Q says demand, particularly for Vega, remains constrained by the U.S. funding environment, longer sales cycles and procurement timing.
Since January 30, 2026 PacBio has also been a narrower company. It sold the intellectual property and assets of its short-read program, the technology acquired with Apton Biosystems in 2023, to Illumina Cambridge Limited for $50.0M in cash, keeping a non-exclusive license back. What remains is a single long-read segment. Every product is labelled Research Use Only, so there is no FDA approval clock behind the shares.
The 2025 Form 10-K counted 485 full-time employees at December 31, 2025; the July 30, 2026 restructuring removes about 40 positions, roughly 8% of the workforce.

Quarter ended June 30, 2026, against the same quarter of 2025, from the Form 10-Q filed on August 6, 2026 and the results release furnished on August 5. Revenue slipped 2% year on year. Product revenue was flat at $32.95M because a 6% rise in consumables offset a 9% fall in instruments, while service and other revenue fell 9%.
The instrument line is the most revealing. Revio units rose to 20 from 15, including what the company called an order for several Revio systems from a new population-scale customer, yet instrument revenue declined. The Form 10-Q attributes this to lower Revio average selling prices on strategic multi-system placements and to cautious buying of capital equipment by academic and research institutions. Vega units fell to 26 from 38. Each discounted Revio is meant to anchor years of reagent purchases, which only pays off if pull-through holds; in Q2 it was about $202,000 per system, the lowest of the five quarters reviewed below.
Gross profit fell 14% to $12.6M. Management named three causes: higher compute and memory costs, Vega manufacturing transition costs, which the 10-Q pairs with exit costs associated with a contract manufacturer, and the lower Revio prices. The 10-Q adds product transition costs tied to the short-read asset sale and amortization of the patent license obtained in the PGI settlement. It also says, in plain terms, that rising computing component costs will temper the pace of margin improvement in the near term. A 32% GAAP margin on a $39M quarter leaves $12.6M of gross profit to cover $57.2M of operating expense.
Research and development rose 2% to $23.0M, selling, general and administrative expense fell 8% to $33.4M, interest expense rose to $2.1M with the PGI settlement liability and other income fell to $2.0M on lower cash balances. The GAAP net loss was $44.7M, or $0.14 per share; the non-GAAP net loss was $41.9M.
Remaining performance obligations, contracted revenue not yet recognized, were $47.9M at June 30, 2026, about 79% expected within twelve months.

Reported total revenue, U.S. dollars in millions.
A single quarter can mislead; five quarters show the pattern. Revenue has moved in a narrow band between $37.2M and $44.6M, with the fourth quarter the strongest, which is typical of capital-equipment sellers whose customers spend year-end budgets. Full-year 2025 revenue was $160.0M against $154.0M in 2024.
Consumables are the steadier line. They rose from $18.9M in Q2 2025 to a record $21.8M in Q1 2026, then fell to $20.1M in Q2 2026, the first sequential decline in the series. The filings reviewed give no single cause. A plausible reading, an inference rather than a company statement, is that the SPRQ-Nx rollout lowered the cost per genome before the extra volume arrived. The third-quarter report will show whether the dip was a transition or a trend.
Revio pull-through tells a similar story. It peaked at about $242,000 per system in Q4 2025 and fell to about $202,000 in Q2 2026. A larger installed base can dilute the average as new systems ramp, and multi-system strategic customers may consume reagents on their own schedule, but a 17% decline from the peak in two quarters is the weakest operating metric in the series. Vega placements, after a launch-year total of 140 units in 2025, have settled around 26 to 27 per quarter.
Cash fell in every quarter; the small Q1 2026 decline includes $48.1M of Illumina sale proceeds.

SPRQ-Nx is the chemistry upgrade on which the 2026 plan rests. On May 26, 2026 PacBio announced worldwide shipments for Revio, with a U.S. list price of $345 per human genome and a sub-$300 cost for customers sequencing about 5,000 genomes a year with applicable discounts. The company described a 30% cost reduction against the previous SPRQ chemistry, achieved partly through multi-use SMRT Cells, higher yield and lower failure rates. Before launch, a beta program across 20 sites in Europe, Asia and the United States ran more than 1,400 runs. DeepConsensus improvements were developed with Google.
Vega followed. On August 5, 2026 the company announced SPRQ-Nx for the benchtop system: up to 90 Gb of HiFi data per run instead of 60 Gb, new two- and four-hour run options, DNA input as low as 500 ng instead of 2 µg, multiplexing of up to 96 samples with PureTarget panels and roughly 40% lower cost per gigabase. The U.S. list price per run dropped to $995 from $1,100. The update also added user login and audit trails designed to support 21 CFR Part 11 workflows in regulated laboratories, a new 5hmC caller and improved 5mC and 6mA callers. On August 20 the company reported that Vega SPRQ-Nx was shipping.
These are list prices and specifications, not PacBio’s gross profit per genome. The trade-off is explicit: each genome now generates less consumable revenue, so the strategy works only if volume rises faster than price falls.
The evidence so far is mixed: Revio units rose to 20 in Q2, but consumables dipped sequentially in the launch quarter and pull-through fell. Large studies are budgeted months in advance, so a price reset takes several quarters to show in volume. The company expects higher revenue in the second half; Q3 and Q4 2026 are the first real test.

On May 7, 2026 PacBio guided to full-year revenue of $165M to $175M. On August 5 it lowered the range to $155M to $165M. The new range spans a 3% decline to a 3% increase on the $160.0M reported for 2025, so at the midpoint the company is guiding to a flat year.
The arithmetic is straightforward. First-half revenue was $76.2M. Reaching the bottom of the range requires about $78.8M in the second half; reaching the top requires about $88.8M. For comparison, the second half of 2025 produced $83.0M, the sum of $38.4M in Q3 and $44.6M in Q4. The guided range therefore implies second-half revenue between about 5% below and 7% above the same period of 2025. These are Merlintrader calculations from reported figures, not company targets.
The 10-Q names three second-half drivers, clinical adoption, SPRQ-Nx consumables and the Basecamp Research program, none with a disclosed dollar contribution.
The top of the range also matters for the PGI settlement: the $5.0M payment due in the first quarter of 2027 rises by $1.0M if 2026 revenue reaches $165.0M, and by another $1.0M at $180.0M.
A fourth quarter like Q4 2025, when revenue rose 14% year on year, plus a consumables recovery in Q3 would make the range look conservative; another quarter of falling consumables would leave too much for the fourth quarter. Twice in 2026 the company has fallen short of its own expectations: in the Q1 release, where management said instrument revenue, particularly Vega, was lower than expected, and in the Q2 cut. The burden of proof therefore sits with execution rather than with the range.

Derived from issuer-rounded segment revenue; quarter ended June 30, 2026.
Consumables were about 51.5% of Q2 revenue on the issuer-rounded figures, instruments 32.8% and service and other revenue 15.6%. The proportions are Merlintrader calculations from $20.1M, $12.8M and $6.1M over $39.0M. The first half was similar: consumables $41.9M of $76.2M. Management treats a rising consumables share as a driver of margin expansion.
| Region | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Americas | $17.624M | $17.687M | flat |
| Europe, Middle East and Africa | $14.426M | $9.467M | +52% |
| Asia-Pacific | $6.957M | $12.612M | -45% |
| Total | $39.007M | $39.766M | -2% |
The geographic split, from the segment note of the Q2 Form 10-Q, shows that the flat total hides two opposite movements. EMEA revenue rose about 52% year on year, consistent with the Q1 release, which attributed 17% EMEA growth in that quarter to consumables demand from account expansion and higher utilization, particularly in clinical settings. Asia-Pacific revenue fell about 45%. Changes are Merlintrader calculations.
The filings do not break down the Asia-Pacific decline by country; they describe U.S.-China tariffs, U.S. export restrictions on certain integrated circuits and the BIOSECURE Act, passed as part of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, as risks.
The flat Americas match the 10-Q description of a shift toward clinical and commercial accounts. Accounts receivable were spread: no customer represented 10% or more of net receivables at June 30, 2026, and 42% of receivables came from domestic customers.

U.S. dollars in millions, as reported.
The longer series is encouraging: operating cash use fell from $259.2M in 2023 to $206.1M in 2024 and $111.2M in 2025. The first half of 2026 is less encouraging: $80.3M of operating cash use against $73.4M in the first half of 2025. Subtracting the $44.7M of the first quarter gives about $35.6M for the second quarter, a Merlintrader calculation. The $8.0M PGI payment, which the March term sheet scheduled for the first quarter, was paid in the second quarter according to the 10-Q, so it sits inside the second-quarter figure. The 10-Q points to higher inventory, up $11.8M in six months, and lower accrued expenses as the main working-capital drains.
Net loss is a poor guide to cash in 2026: the first-quarter GAAP loss was only $8.3M because of the $45.8M Illumina gain.
The company states in the Q2 10-Q that existing cash, equivalents and investments will be sufficient to fund projected operating requirements beyond the next 12 months from the filing date. That is the standard going-concern horizon, not funding to the note maturities. Dividing $236.9M by the Q2 pace of about $35.6M gives more than six quarters, a sensitivity that ignores the July cost cuts, note interest of roughly $9.1M a year (Merlintrader calculation from the coupons) and the PGI payments.
The balance sheet adds a structural point. Stockholders’ equity turned into a deficit of $33.2M at June 30, 2026, and $317.8M of the $751.9M of total assets is goodwill. The tangible asset base available to support $644.3M of convertible notes at carrying value is therefore thinner than the headline total suggests.

Terms from the Q2 2026 Form 10-Q. Share counts are Merlintrader calculations from the conversion rates of 204.5157 and 46.5116 shares per $1,000 of principal; the 10-Q reports 61.415M shares issuable on conversion in total. The net carrying value in the balance sheet was $644.3M.
In November 2024 PacBio exchanged $459.0M of 1.50% notes due 2028, held by SB Northstar, for $200.0M of new 2029 notes, 20,451,570 shares and $50.0M of cash. It came with a letter agreement: as long as SB Northstar and its affiliates hold at least $180M of the 2029 notes, PacBio faces negative covenants on additional debt and liens, with an exception for up to $75M of secured credit facilities, and certain guarantees trigger a matching guarantee of the 2029 notes. The company reported compliance with these covenants at June 30, 2026. A breach could allow acceleration of the 2029 notes and, through cross-default, of the 2030 notes.
With the shares at $2.51 at the October 1, 2026 close, the 2029 conversion price is roughly double the market price and the 2030 conversion price more than eight times it. Holders therefore have no economic reason to convert, and the company cannot force conversion: its redemption rights start on August 20, 2027 for the 2029 notes and June 20, 2028 for the 2030 notes, and only if the share price has been at least 150% of the conversion price for 20 of 30 trading days. In practice the notes are debt to be repaid, refinanced or exchanged; the 10-Q warns that a shortfall could mean dilutive capital raising or a restructuring at higher rates.
Equity awards outstanding at June 30, 2026 covered 46.451M shares, and stockholders approved 16,000,000 more plan shares on June 3, registered on Form S-8 on August 7. Awards plus conversion shares equal about 35% of the 310.81M shares outstanding, a Merlintrader calculation adding instruments of very different likelihood. An automatic shelf (Form S-3ASR) has been on file since February 25, 2026. No equity offering or at-the-market sale appears in the filings reviewed through October 2, 2026; first-half financing cash came only from employee equity plans, $1.7M.
The PGI settlement of March 2026 adds fixed commitments: in exchange for a royalty-free, non-exclusive license under U.S. Patent No. 7,767,441 and its family, a five-and-a-half-year covenant not to sue and dismissal of all claims, PacBio recorded $15.4M of charges, paid $8.0M in Q2 and owes $5.0M in the first quarter of each of 2027, 2028 and 2029.

In 2025 PacBio paused its high-throughput short-read platform, derived from the 2023 Apton Biosystems acquisition. The first half of 2025 carried $382.4M of related costs, mostly $359.3M of accelerated amortization, which explains that period’s $468.0M GAAP net loss.
On January 30, 2026 the company completed the sale of the short-read intellectual property and related clustering, reagent and detection technology to Illumina Cambridge Limited. Illumina paid $50.0M in cash and assumed certain liabilities, and granted PacBio a non-exclusive license back to certain of the purchased intellectual property. At PacBio’s direction 4% of the net proceeds went to the former Apton equity holders, in exchange for waiving all remaining milestone obligations from the 2023 acquisition. Net cash to PacBio was about $48.1M and the gain on disposal was $45.8M. The company said the sale let it accelerate the global launch of SPRQ-Nx.
Six months later came a third round of cost cuts. On July 30, 2026 the board approved a restructuring that includes operating-expense reductions and a reduction in force of about 40 employees, roughly 8% of the workforce. Including non-headcount actions, the company expects to reduce annualized operating expenses by $30M to $40M by the end of 2027, with pre-tax charges of about $2.0M, mostly severance, to be recognized in the third quarter of 2026. The 10-Q expects both R&D and SG&A to decline for the rest of 2026.
For scale: non-GAAP operating expense was $56.1M in Q2 2026, about $225M annualized. A $30M to $40M reduction is roughly 13% to 18% of that run rate, a Merlintrader calculation. The company itself warns that cuts can impair investment in developing, marketing and selling products.

PacBio argues that HiFi genomes are the most complete single test for rare disease and the best raw material for biological AI models. The 2026 evidence needs to be read for what it is.
In 2026 the New England Journal of Medicine published “Clinical Long-Read Genome Sequencing for Rare-Disease Diagnostics” by de Bitter and colleagues at Radboud University Medical Center and Maastricht University Medical Center+ (N Engl J Med 2026;395:405-408, DOI 10.1056/NEJMc2602512), published in the journal’s correspondence section. PacBio’s Q2 release describes it as showing that HiFi long-read sequencing is a clinically effective first-tier diagnostic test that improves diagnostic yield while simplifying the laboratory workflow. Such publications support clinical adoption, which is less tied to academic budgets, but do not change the regulatory status of PacBio products, which remain Research Use Only; clinical use runs through laboratory-developed tests validated by the laboratories themselves.
On March 18, 2026 Basecamp Research, which describes itself as a frontier AI lab for therapeutic design, selected HiFi to power its Trillion Gene Atlas: about 100,000 samples to be deeply sequenced from more than 31 countries across five continents, to train biological foundation models. No financial terms were disclosed; sequencing began in Q2. The new CEO named AI-related HiFi products and clinically relevant databases as priorities on August 5.
On September 28, 2026 Sampled, a New Jersey genomics services provider, announced a five-year VA contract worth up to $27.1M for Million Veteran Program analyses, from genotyping and long-read genomes to methylation and proteomics. The release says Sampled is equipped with multiple PacBio Revio systems and is among the largest users of the platform in the United States. On September 30 EpiSign launched METRIC 5-base, extending automated analysis of more than 300 episignature disorders from microarrays to Illumina 5-base, PacBio HiFi and Oxford Nanopore data. The product is for research use only. The release quotes Ambry Genetics on an initial evaluation of EpiSign METRIC using PacBio HiFi data.
Both drew strong attention to the shares in late September; neither is a PacBio contract. The VA award covers several assay types over five years, so any PacBio consumable revenue from it is undisclosed and likely a fraction of the headline, and EpiSign also supports two competitors. The fair reading: HiFi data is becoming a standard input for clinical-research tools, which supports utilization over time, not a step change in revenue.

The 2025 Form 10-K names Illumina, BGI/MGI, Thermo Fisher, Oxford Nanopore, Roche, Qiagen, Element, Bionano, Ultima and 10x Genomics among competitors, many with significantly greater resources.
The competitive map has three layers. In short-read sequencing Illumina dominates, and since January 2026 it owns the short-read technology PacBio developed; PacBio no longer competes there directly, but every clinical lab weighs a HiFi genome against a cheaper short-read genome plus add-on tests. In long reads the direct rival is Oxford Nanopore, with which PacBio has a history of patent litigation in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany described in the 10-K. In methylation and epigenetics, Illumina’s 5-base chemistry now offers methylation from short reads, as the EpiSign launch illustrates by supporting both. The SPRQ-Nx price reset is PacBio’s answer to the first layer: in November 2025 Christian Henry said the new chemistry should make the technology economically competitive with many short-read platforms.
HiFi’s advantages are clearest where short reads struggle: structural variants, repeat expansions, phasing and methylation in one run. Its handicaps have been cost and throughput, the focus of the 2026 plan.
On regulation, PacBio products carry the label Research Use Only, not for use in diagnostic procedures. Clinical laboratories use them in laboratory-developed tests. The new Vega 21 CFR Part 11 controls are software features, not an FDA clearance. Trade policy, export controls and memory costs are a larger near-term variable than FDA status.

Mark Van Oene became president and chief executive officer on August 5, 2026. He joined PacBio in 2021 as chief operating officer. Since January 28, 2026 he had already been running sales and customer support on an interim basis, while Christian Henry took over operations and R&D. Henry stepped down after six years; he stays on the board and is senior business advisor through December 31, 2026.
Van Oene’s employment agreement sets a base salary of $743,000 and a target bonus of 100% of salary. A Form 4 filed on August 11 shows August 10 grants of 489,130 restricted stock units, vesting annually through 2029, and an option on 1,967,888 shares at $1.15, vesting monthly over 36 months. A Form 4 filed on August 18 reports 26,911 shares sold on August 17 at a weighted average of $1.13, which the filing explains as shares sold automatically to cover tax withholding on vesting restricted stock units; after the sale he held 2,705,853 shares directly. A tax-withholding sale is not a discretionary sale, and a grant is not a purchase, so neither should be read as a signal of insider conviction.
The board changed several times in 2026. Christopher Gibson, Ph.D., joined on March 3. Chief accounting officer Michele Farmer left on March 21; CFO Jim Gibson took on the role of principal accounting officer. At the June 3 annual meeting the pay vote passed with about 114.1M votes for and 21.2M against, and the 16,000,000-share plan amendment with about 114.9M for and 20.5M against. Christopher Smith, re-elected on June 3, resigned from the board on July 8; the company said it was not aware of any disagreement. John Milligan, Ph.D., chairs the board.
The execution test for the new leadership is measurable: consumables growth after SPRQ-Nx, gross-margin recovery, delivery of the $30M to $40M expense reduction and a credible plan for the notes.

What to watch at the third-quarter report. Consumables against the $21.8M of Q1 and $20.1M of Q2; Revio pull-through against about $202,000; Revio and Vega placements; GAAP and non-GAAP gross margin against 32% and 36%; operating expense after the July cuts; operating cash use against the roughly $35.6M of Q2; the full-year range of $155M to $165M; any revenue disclosure tied to Basecamp; and any financing, note repurchase or covenant disclosure. The date of the report had not been announced as of October 2, 2026.
Editorial assessment. PacBio has a differentiated technology, a recurring-revenue mechanism that accounts for more than half of sales, a lower cost structure than two years ago and growing evidence that clinicians, population programs and software developers want HiFi data. The financial side has not yet followed: flat revenue, a lower 2026 range, a weaker gross margin and higher first-half cash use, with $641.0M of notes against a market value of about $780M. The question is whether cheaper genomes raise volume and margin fast enough to handle the debt from operating strength. The next two quarterly reports provide the first measurable answer. No price target, trade instruction or probability of a market move is assigned.

PacBio sells HiFi long-read sequencing systems (Revio for high throughput, Vega for the benchtop), the consumables that run on them and service. Consumables were about 51.5% of Q2 2026 revenue. Its products are labelled Research Use Only.
On August 5, 2026 the company cut the full-year range to $155M to $165M from $165M to $175M. The filings point to constrained instrument demand, especially for Vega, tied to the U.S. funding environment, longer sales cycles and lower Revio prices on multi-system orders. Management expects higher revenue in the second half from clinical adoption, SPRQ-Nx and the Basecamp program.
At June 30, 2026 cash, equivalents and investments were $236.9M. Convertible notes totalled $641.0M of principal: $200.0M at 1.50% due August 15, 2029 and $441.0M at 1.375% due December 15, 2030. First-half 2026 operating cash use was $80.3M.
Only if holders choose to convert, and the initial conversion prices of about $4.89 and $21.50 per share are well above the $2.51 close of October 1, 2026. Unless the shares rise substantially, the notes must be repaid, refinanced or exchanged, which could involve new equity.
No. SPRQ-Nx is a sequencing chemistry that lowered the Revio list cost to $345 per genome and raised Vega output to 90 Gb per run. PacBio products remain Research Use Only; clinical use runs through laboratory-developed tests.
