Where NextDecade Corporation stands now

The first five trains remain under construction. At September-end, overall completion was 79.7% for Trains 1 and 2, 55.2% for Train 3, 22.5% for Train 4 and 14.0% for Train 5. First LNG and substantial completion have different technical and contractual completion tests.

The third-quarter common-stockholder profit of $155.381 million includes the effect of large consolidated interest-rate derivative gains; nine-month common holders recorded a $46.451 million loss. Cash used in operations and construction investment have different scopes, and restricted project funding has limited availability to the parent.

NextDecade’s common-equity return depends on the timing of project cash, partner distribution conditions and financing claims. A large constructed asset base can take longer to produce parent receipts if commissioning, margins or the funding schedule develop less favorably than expected.

The constructive case

Successful commissioning and reliable LNG output support useful margins and project distributions while the parent manages financing and later expansion under disciplined commitments.

The cautious case

Start-up delays, weaker margins or additional capital needs slow parent receipts while prior claims accrue, reducing the common-equity residual despite a large constructed asset base.

Red flags

  • First LNG and substantial completion remain company expectations, with system integration and testing still ahead.
  • Consolidated results and assets include joint ventures whose economic interests are shared with other investors.
  • Large derivative gains do not represent current LNG sales from the unfinished facility.
  • Project restricted cash cannot be treated as freely available to meet parent obligations.
  • Intermediate financing, paid-in-kind interest, warrants and exchange rights affect the residual common-equity claim.
  • A pending court appeal and separate expansion permitting create regulatory and legal uncertainty.
  • Cumulative project-level cash-flow projections use management assumptions and differ from parent dividend capacity.

NEXT Stock FAQ: NextDecade Corporation Questions Answered

Does NextDecade already produce LNG at Rio Grande?

The first five trains remain under construction as of the research date. Management expects first gas into the site before the end of 2026, first LNG from Train 1 in the second quarter of 2027 and substantial completion in the third quarter. These are different company milestones, with production and reliable ordinary operation still requiring the remaining commissioning and completion work.

Why did NEXT report a profit with no revenue?

The third-quarter accounts included a large derivative gain, principally associated with interest-rate swaps. Consolidated net income was then allocated between non-controlling interests and common stockholders. The quarterly common-holder profit therefore requires the financing and accounting context, alongside the operating loss and the absence of an LNG revenue base. The nine-month common-holder result remained a loss.

Does NextDecade own all the cash generated by the project?

It has different distribution rights in Phase 1, Train 4 and Train 5, with partner-return conditions and financing obligations. Project cash becomes available under the relevant agreements before being allocated among owners. The parent also has costs and financing claims of its own. Consolidation of project assets and results does not assign all of their economics to existing common shares.

Is the projected $2.4 billion an annual dividend forecast?

The figure is management's cumulative projection of NextDecade's share of project-level distributable cash flow over the ramp-up period from initial Train 1 production to Train 5's expected first commercial delivery in the second quarter of 2031. It is non-GAAP and assumption-dependent. Parent interest and administration, financing restrictions and capital needs affect the eventual resources available to common owners.

What would make the investment case more convincing?

Reliable start-up, consistent production, customer performance and a clear route through the distribution and financing structure would improve visibility. Construction percentages and authorizations are useful progress indicators, while operating cash and actual parent receipts provide later evidence. The strongest outcome connects the physical project with a sustainable return after the claims required to finance it, without relying on an unsupported price target.
