Illustrative cover.

The central question

The next photonics comparison will be written in financial statements. Coherent reports on November 4; Lumentum and Applied Optoelectronics follow on November 5; POET reports on November 16. The companies enter those events at very different commercial scales, from early optical-engine revenue to billion-dollar quarterly sales.

Applied Optoelectronics has also completed a $600 million equity program, adding funding for its expansion. The question across the group is how product demand, customer qualification and manufacturing investment become recognized revenue with workable margins. Each company offers a different test of that transition.

01. Four earnings dates, four commercial stages

The optical supply chain includes components, engines and completed interconnect products. Exposure to faster data-center networks does not give every supplier the same revenue model, production maturity or customer concentration. A development agreement can be strategically valuable long before it contributes material sales, while an established supplier must protect margins at much higher shipment volumes.

This November reporting sequence offers a practical way to compare those stages. Coherent and Lumentum can provide evidence about large-scale operating performance. Applied Optoelectronics can show how quickly its manufacturing ramp is becoming revenue. POET can show how its early commercial base develops alongside larger announced customer commitments.

The dates come from the companies’ October announcements: Coherent, Lumentum, Applied Optoelectronics and POET.

02. POET: the gap between purchase orders and reported revenue

POET’s June-quarter revenue was $569,925, up 13% sequentially and 112% year over year. The company reported a net loss of $11.3 million and research and development expense of $5.8 million. Cash and short-term investments were $796.3 million at June 30, following its $400 million May financing. Second-quarter results.

Those figures describe an early commercial business with substantial resources relative to its current sales. The financial balance provides capacity to fund product development and execution; the revenue base still needs to expand to change the economics of the company.

The customer commitments have a different scale. POET disclosed an initial $50 million Lumilens purchase order within a framework with potential exceeding $500 million over five years. It also disclosed a subsequent $2.4 million purchase order from an existing customer. The initial order, the longer-term framework potential and recognized quarterly revenue are three different measures. Their value to the income statement depends on delivery and the applicable revenue-recognition requirements. Commercial update within the quarterly release.

The November 16 results can therefore be assessed through the progression of actual sales, the composition of those sales and concrete customer-delivery developments. A larger order pipeline expands opportunity, while the timing and economics of fulfillment determine the pace of commercialization.

At this stage, percentage growth also needs a dollar context. A high growth rate from a small base can demonstrate direction without yet supporting the company’s cost structure. Conversely, investment ahead of deliveries can depress near-term earnings while building the ability to fulfill future orders. The useful assessment combines both sides, rather than treating either the order total or current revenue as a complete description of the business.

03. Coherent: scale makes mix and margins decisive

Coherent reported $2.0455 billion of revenue for the fiscal fourth quarter ended June 30. Datacenter and Communications contributed $1.615 billion, with Industrial contributing $430.5 million. GAAP gross margin was 38.5%. Fiscal fourth-quarter results.

The scale changes the investment question. Coherent already has a large commercial base. Its next report can show how growth, product mix and operating costs interact across that base. Expansion in datacenter demand can support revenue, while profitability also depends on the economics of the products shipped and the performance of the other businesses.

The segment split is useful because company-wide growth and AI-related growth are not interchangeable. Datacenter and Communications was the larger contributor in the June quarter, but Industrial still generated meaningful sales. A change in total revenue can therefore reflect multiple markets, and the margin outcome can depend on their relative contribution.

November 4 brings the first fiscal-quarter results for FY2027. The most informative comparison will connect reported revenue with margin performance and the outlook for the following period. Higher sales would establish volume; sustained or improving margins would add evidence about the quality of that volume. Reporting announcement.

At June 30, Coherent reported $1.162 billion in cash and equivalents and $825 million in short-term investments. Those balances provide a dated financial reference, while the upcoming statements can update the effects of investment and operating activity. The AI photonics comparison covering Coherent supplies additional product and competitive context.

04. Lumentum: an explicit outlook creates a clear benchmark

Lumentum’s quarter ended June 27 produced $1.0063 billion in revenue. GAAP gross margin was 47.4% and GAAP operating margin was 27.8%; the corresponding non-GAAP measures were 50.4% and 36.6%. The company guided the next fiscal quarter to revenue of $1.225–1.275 billion and a non-GAAP operating margin of 39.5–40.5%. Fiscal fourth-quarter results and outlook.

That outlook gives the November 5 report a defined comparison. Revenue can be evaluated against the company’s own range, and the non-GAAP operating margin against the corresponding non-GAAP target. The new outlook can then indicate whether the company expects the momentum to persist into another quarter.

Volume and profitability are both important here. Revenue growth with a margin outcome near the guided range would carry a different implication from similar growth accompanied by materially weaker production economics. Product mix, delivery timing and operating expenses can all influence the result, so the financial statements need to be read together.

The prior quarter also contained an unusually large accounting item: a $7.8 billion one-time noncash debt-extinguishment charge drove a $7.2 billion GAAP net loss. That result sits alongside the positive operating margins described above. The charge therefore needs its own context when comparing bottom-line results across quarters. Quarterly financial statements.

The upcoming report can clarify the operating trajectory after that exceptional item, while preserving the distinction between GAAP earnings and adjusted measures. Read the AI photonics comparison covering Lumentum for the broader positioning.

05. Applied Optoelectronics: new equity funds the manufacturing test

Applied Optoelectronics announced completion of its $600 million at-the-market equity program on October 5. It sold 5,694,845 shares and received approximately $588.0 million net of fees and commissions. Intended uses include equipment, research and development, general corporate purposes and manufacturing expansion. Completed equity program.

The completed financing changes the resources available for execution and increases the share count. The business outcome now depends on the return those resources can support: productive equipment, qualified output, customer deliveries and the margins achieved on those sales. Funding capacity and earning a return on capacity are consecutive parts of the same expansion.

The June quarter reported $191.9 million in revenue, a 27.7% GAAP gross margin and a $22.8 million net loss. The company said the volume of its 800G products had more than doubled sequentially. Manufacturing capacity was approaching 200,000 units per month, with a target of 650,000 monthly 800G/1.6T units by the end of 2026. Second-quarter results and manufacturing update.

The year-end figure is a company target. The November 5 results can show progress toward it and how output is translating into sales. Installed equipment, available manufacturing capacity and shipped products are related, but the realized economics depend on production yields, qualification, customer acceptance and delivery timing.

The June 30 balance sheet combined cash, equivalents and restricted cash at $508.758 million. The October equity proceeds belong to a later period. New financial statements can update the balance after intervening spending and financing, giving investors a clearer picture of the expansion’s cash requirements.

Applied Optoelectronics therefore enters this reporting cycle with both an operating ramp and a recent capital raise. Revenue growth can demonstrate demand conversion; gross margin and cash deployment can show whether the manufacturing buildout is developing on economically useful terms. The AI photonics comparison covering Applied Optoelectronics adds the competitive background.

06. Reading the November sequence

The four reports can answer complementary questions. Coherent and Lumentum provide large-scale revenue and margin evidence. Applied Optoelectronics provides a manufacturing-ramp test after fresh equity funding. POET provides an early commercialization test against announced customer commitments.

A stronger outcome would combine increasing recognized revenue with evidence that the underlying economics are improving. A more mixed outcome could include stronger orders alongside slower delivery, higher sales with weaker margins, or substantial spending before qualified output increases. Each combination changes the timing of the potential shareholder benefit.

The comparison consequently works best with three measures kept visible: commercial scale today, progress toward the next operating milestone and the financial cost of reaching it. The companies share an optical-AI opportunity, while their stage of development determines which evidence matters most.
